The song, ‘Diamonds’, by Hawk Nelson, has been one of the main songs that I keep going back to in this adventure. It talks about how, when we are in the fire, when we are in the hard things that are so heavy, God is really making diamonds out of us. He is purifying and shaping us from just a lump of rock into the beautiful plan that He has for us: diamonds. Diamonds are strong, beautiful, and people notice them.
I have truly gotten to see God do this in my life and my heart.
I often say that this season of my life has been the hardest, by far… but that it has also been the one in which I have grown the most as a person and in my faith.
Over and over again, I have seen that He has had a plan in it all, and a purpose for the pain. That He truly has been making diamonds out of us. He doesn’t have us in this trial for no reason! Through it, he has enabled me to connect with people I never would have otherwise. God has taught me about things I never would have known, and brought me so many places I never would have gone. He has shaped my heart, and brought me to my knees, and given me strength I never would have known. I praise Him!
Recently, however…
…things got harder, and I lost sight of the diamonds part of this whole thing. All I saw was the trials, the fire, and the suffering, but I lost sight of what God was making through it. I lost sight of that fact that He had a plan and a purpose. I knew that He was with me, but instead of focusing on Him, I just focused on enduring.
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. Hebrews 12:1-3 (NIV)
We have to fix our eyes on Jesus, on the goal, the prize! If all we see is the pain and suffering, we won’t be able to make it to the finish line, to the joy set before us! We must not forget that God has a purpose in the pain, and a plan for us. His plans for us are still to prosper, they are still for good. We cannot forget that. He loves His children and only desires what is best for us. He doesn’t delight in our pain, but He knows what He is doing. He will not give us anything beyond what we can bear.
