It’s funny. My actual birthday was just over a month ago. But I would have been happy to totally ignore it. July 23rd, on the other hand, has become much more of a mile marker in my life. Rather than my birthday, it’s the day I celebrate, and the day I look back over my year and evaluate life.
Five years ago today, I got sick.
Four years ago today, I was homeless, fleeing from mold.
Three years ago today, it had been almost two months since I’d been given a month to live, and God whispered a promise into my heart.
Two years ago today, my book He’s Making Diamonds: A Teen’s Thoughts on Faith Through Chronic Illness was released into the world.
One year ago today, I was just starting to participate in normal life and be involved in our local community.
Today, my entire body aches — but not from illness, from living. Today, full of dreams, excitement, (and some nervousness) for the future. I’m planning my third online conference. I’ve written three books and am writing a fourth. I’m a Young Life leader for our local area. I’m applying for jobs and internships. I’m an active member of a local small group. I’m taking several online courses. I’m living.
Tell me what’s impossible with God! Nothing, coach.
Today, I’m celebrating the fact that I’m still breathing. I shouldn’t be. Today, I’m celebrating the fact that not only am I breathing, I’m living, dreaming, and growing. Today, I’m celebrating every single email and text and DM I’ve received from you all. I’m celebrating the amazing way God has used my story for His glory and for the encouragement of my brothers and sisters in Christ. It was so not me, y’all.
Our God is so good. All the time.
Right now, my heart is simply overflowing with awe, joy, and praise. I can’t believe what God has done in my heart, body, life, and relationships. I don’t have the words.
